The Continental School District’s governing board has narrowed the list to five candidates in its search for a superintendent.

Continental is hoping to replace Superintendent Dr. Gaye Leo by the end of the school year. Leo announced her intention to resign in January.

The finalists include:

  • Dr. D. Sharon Hill, owner/CEO of Danu Group and an educational consultant. A former superintendent in Washington state, she is a former Charter School Executive Director in Arizona and has a Ph.D. in PreK-12 curriculum.

  • James Nelson, superintendent of Nadaburg Unified School District in Wittmann. He has a Master’s degree in Educational Administration and is a Ph.D. candidate in Educational Administration.

  • Ronald Tollefson, superintendent of Washburn Public Schools/Montefiore Public Schools in Washburn, N.D. He has a Master’s degree in education specializing in school administration.

  • Katharine Fitzgerald, assistant superintendent in Brimfield, Brookfield, Holland, Sturbridge and Wales, Mass. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s degree in Reading.

  • Dr. James Hennings, an associate professor at Northern Arizona University. He is a lecturer at Cochise College and Pima Community College and has a Master’s in Educational Leadership and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction. He is a former superintendent in Tombstone.

Dick Roberts, governing board member and “point person” for the superintendent search, said the candidates will be invited for interviews at Continental School.

On April 28, candidates will be given a tour of the school facility by Leo and governing board President Bonnie Klahr. They will be interviewed by a committee consisting of two each of teachers, school staff, parents and community members, Roberts said.

A Community Forum in the school cafeteria will be held at 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. April 28. Teachers, parents and members of the community are invited. Facilitated by Karen Beckvar, a member of the Arizona School Board Association, this will be an opportunity to meet the candidates and ask questions.

On April 29, each of the candidates will be interviewed by the Governing Board in Executive Session.

“After the interviews the Governing Board will meet in Executive Session to hopefully select a candidate for school superintendent/principal and offer a contract… the new superintendent would start with the 2008-2009 school year.

“We had 19 applicants and a total number of good ones; it was rough to bring it down to five,” Roberts said. “All have assistant superintendent or superintendent experience. We will hopefully have a good selection to pick from.”

Leo, who has been superintendent since 2000, is leaving at the end of the school year to return to Cave Creek north of Phoenix to be closer to family. Her official date of resignation is June 30.

In many areas of the country Mr. Woods would be free to select other desired items. The resident's initial call would have been ignored since the suspicious person did not seemingly gain entrance was no longer present. "
