Professor Emeritus in Horticulture at Michigan State University, passed away on April 4, 2008, in Green Valley, as a result of complications of a previous stroke. Professor Dewey was born April 25, 1918, at Geneva, N.Y. He attended Cornell University, where he earned the BS degree in 1939 and a Ph.D. in 1950. He served in the U.S. Air Force in India and the Mariana Islands during WWII. At M.S.U., he was appointed Assistant Professor in 1952, Associate Professor in 1955, Professor in 1960, and acting Department Chairman of Horticulture in 1977. He retired in 1983. Prior to coming to M.S.U., he served as a horticulturist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture at Cheyenne, Wyo. and Fresno, Calif. Professor Dewey provided knowledge and leadership in the development of long-term controlled atmosphere storage of Michigan apples. He was recognized as a worldwide authority on the handling and storage of fruits and vegetables. He worked with educators, researchers and growers in England, Israel, South Africa, Australia and the United States. He is survived by Bethel Marie (Bidwell) Dewey, his wife of over 60 years; his son James of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; his daughter Anne of San Carlos, Calif. and her partner Patti Haring; a brother James of Ithaca, N.Y.; and a sister Barbara Sherman of Altmar, N.Y. He was preceded in death by his parents Ruby Cook Dewey and Elmer W. Dewey; and his infant twin daughter Alison. Celebration of Life memorial services will be held at St. Francis-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church in Green Valley at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 25, 2008. Memorials may be made in his name to Michigan State University Horticulture Gardens, in care of 300 Spartan Way, East Lansing, MI 48824; or to St. Francis-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church, 600 La Canada Dr., Green Valley, AZ 85614.
