NewsThe fourth lecture in Tumac‡cori National Historical Park’s Centennial Lecture Series will be presented by renowned anthropologist Dr. Thomas E. Sheridan on Friday, April 18, at 7 p.m. at the Old Nogales Courthouse. Sheridan will use Powerpoint images to illustrate his talk on the subject of his latest book, “Landscapes of Fraud: Mission Tumac‡cori, the Baca Float, and the Betrayal of the O’odham.” Come explore how the penetration of the evolving capitalist world-system created and destroyed communities in the upper Santa Cruz Valley of Arizona from the late 1600s to the 1970s. Sheridan will discuss how the O’odham culture was fragmented by the arrival of the Spanish; how they obtained a land grant in 1807 to try to preserve some of their former holdings; how the Baca Float superseded theirs and everyone else’s claim to the land; and how shady real estate promotions of the 19th and 20th centuries continued to defraud the rightful owners of the land. The lecture will take place in the Old Nogales Courthouse, 21 E. Court Street, in Nogales, Ariz. Admission is free.
