Green Valley Recreation members elected four new board of directors representatives Tuesday morning, with new officers expected to be chosen and installed today.

GVR President Lou Lovat congratulated the winners and thanked departing members and wished them well.

Tuesday’s event was the recreation association’s annual meeting.

GVR operates multimillion-dollar recreation programs and facilities and offers education and cultural program for its members.

Selected to three-year terms were:

  • Mike Banks, who came to Green Valley from a career in California management;

  • Bob Barry, who had a career as a Navy officer and then with Ball Aerospace;

  • Joe Roth, who came here from Carmel Valley, Calif., where he was a senior executive with toy companies;

  • Linda Sparks, a retired leader with the U.S. National Space Administration, who also lived later in a Colorado Rockies village and was one of the townspeople who helped run that oft-snow-laden town.

    They replaced departing board members Joe Schechter, Ann Gillingham, Joe Molski and Lovat.

    Loren Thornson retired as GVR’s parliamentarian for 12 years and received special thanks from Lovat.

    Lovat also received a round of applause from the board members and about 75 members in attendance.

    Jim Cassidy, GVR finance director, described what he called “a very productive and efficient year during 2007.

    Operating expenses were $107,860 below capital project expenses were $26,489 below budget.

    He attributed some of the financial benefits to an unbudgeted income tax returns totaling $34,422, an other unexpected revenues of more than $32,000.

    He also said payroll charges were lower during the transition period when former director Jeff Ziegler left for another job and before the hiring of his eventual replacement by current director Anndrea Blackshear.

    Cassidy said 2007 was a “very successful year for GVR” but cautioned that the slowdown in new home sales and resales and construction costs increases “will severely impact GVR’s ability to complete as many projects as it has in the past.”

    During 2007, he said, GVR completed seven projects for a total $911,149. Included in the amounts, he said, were contributions of $5,500 from the Racquetball Club and $40,000 from the Tennis Club.

    There are four major construction projects that will cost about $7 million, some of it already spent.
