Regional alliance plans ‘Art in Wilderness’
Sky Island Alliance, a regional land preservation group, asked 19 local artists to create “Art in Wilderness” celebrating the beauty of the Tumac‡cori Highlands.
The show will be held at the Pima County Community Performing Arts and Learning Center at 4 p.m., Saturday, March 22.
Green Valley residents and guests are invited. There is no charge.
One spring weekend, Mike Quigley, Tumac‡cori Highlands Wilderness Campaign Coordinator led a group of local artists on a trip to the Highlands for hiking, camping and exploring this pristine federal land 25 miles southwest of Green Valley.
Afterward, each visitor created artwork inspired by their own experiences in the Highlands.
The result is a presentation jointly sponsored by the Sky Island Alliance and the Green Valley Friends of the Tumac‡cori Highlands.
The artwork involved in this show consists of paintings, sculptures, sketches, essays, photographs, poems and songs.
Some of the participating artists are from our community.
The next stop for “Art in Wilderness” is scheduled for Washington, D.C. this spring.

Legion volunteers set for Poppy Day March 28
American Legion Auxiliary and Legion No. 66 volunteers will distribute the familiar red, handcrafted poppies honoring America’s war dead on Friday, March 28.
Each nine-piece poppy is made by veterans who are paid a small amount for each flower.
For some, this is the only income.
The poppy is never sold, but given in exchange for a contribution.
Approximately 25 million Americans wear the poppy and contribute more than $2 million for rehabilitation and welfare programs.
The annual Poppy Day pays tribute to those veterans who have died during the past 80 years.
