NewsArea residents apparently like Sen. John McCain for president as the Republican senator was the leading vote getter in last Tuesday’s Arizona primary. McCain had been leading the Republican field but apparently won the nomination when his nearest rival, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, dropped out of the race. Based on data from the Pima County Division of Elections, McCain picked up 2,052 votes from the 10 Green Valley and Sahuarita voting places, outpacing Romney’s 1,848 votes. On the Democratic side, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton got 1,763 to Illinois Sen. Barak Obama’s 1,233. Many of the precincts across Pima County were combined, reducing the number of actual places where voters could vote. The two political parties paid the county to conduct the primary elections, and to save money, the elections division reduced the number of places to vote. In the Green Valley and Sahuarita area, polls were open at the Country Club of Green Valley County, St. Francis-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church, McGee Ranch center, Desert Hills, Canoa Hills, Quail Creek, Also Sahuarita Baptist Church, Rancho Resort, Sonora Clubhouse and Rancho Sahuarita. Here’s the breakdown by polling place: Throughout Pima County, 40.1 percent of the 183,964 registered Democrats, and 39.8 percent of the 151,143 registered Republicans voted in the primary. That was 73,674 Democrats and 60,159 Republicans. The national Democratic Party says Clinton has 1,046 delegates to Obama’s 940, totals not including Saturday’s primary and caucuses. The figures include some super delegates who have already made their preferences known. But many of the super delegates — party officials for the most part — won’t reveal how they’ll vote until the party’s Denver convention in August. The Associated Press said Saturday Clinton leads Obama, 1,055 to 998 in delegates. It will take 2,025 delegate votes at the convention to secure the nomination. On the Republican side, it will take 1,191 delegate votes to win the nomination. The Republicans will gather in Minneapolis-St. Paul on Sept. 1-4. jlamb@gvnews.com | 547-9749
