NewsGreen Valley News The Rio Rico Fire District is asking property owners who may have a structure that is abandoned and/or ready to be demolished to allow firefighters to conduct training in it. The training would benefit the Rio Rico Fire District and help for regional training the RRFD would coordinate. There are three types of training these buildings would be used for: “This type of training has been successful in the Phoenix Fire Department,” Deputy Chief Larry Nielson said, “and abandoned/vacant buildings can provide the valuable training ground needed for these different types of training.” If a property owner has a vacant structure that he would like to donate for use but doesn’t want the building destroyed, he can request it be used for non-destructive burning. Buildings that are most sought-after are abandoned or vacant single family residences, multi-family residences, one or two-story apartment buildings, schools, strip shopping centers, large “big box” facilities (i.e. produce warehouses, commercial structures, grocery stores, etc.). Some of the criteria for the properties include having had completed an asbestos survey and proof of insurance. Contact Deputy Chief Larry Nielson at (520) 281-8194 or Training Coordinator Dave Aho at (520) 281-8421 for more information.
