Anza Trail School has been recognized for education design excellence in American School & University 2007 Architectural Portfolio.

Plaques will be presented to the Sahuarita School Board, Superintendent Jay St. John and Principal Kathy Shiba at the school board meeting at 6:30 tonight at the Sahuarita Auditorium, 350 W. Sahuarita Road.

They will be presented by Ron Essley, president of Emc2 Group Architects Planners, PC, the architectural firm responsible for design and construction administration of the school.

The project is featured in the November 2007 edition of the magazine and also on the Web at www.SchoolDesigns.com.

An annual competition honoring education design excellence, the Architectural Portfolio spotlights projects representing some of the most effective learning environments in America.

“We are pleased that professionals connected with American School and University magazine felt that the design of Anza Trail School was worth recognizing as one of the outstanding school designs in America this year,” St. John said.

“The team of Emc2 and the Governing Board and staff of Sahuarita Unified School District worked well together to make Anza Trail a school in which the whole community can take pride. Our expectations are to continue to design schools with Emc2 in the future to meet the needs of our community.”

Anza Trail is a campus style K-8 school, where the building arrangement was selected to allow maximum separation between lower grades and upper-grade classroom buildings for improved circulation and student safety.

The separated buildings are stepped to follow the natural slope of the site, which is wedged between two washes.

The four buildings, administration/library, multi-purpose/gymnasium, and two two-story classroom wings surround a courtyard that slopes to create a natural amphitheater.

The 112,002-square-foot school was completed in January 2007, and cost $17,095,097.

The town of Sahuarita contributed $2 million toward the joint-use ball fields, tennis courts and concession building. The ball field irrigation system ties into the town’s reclaimed water system.

Because of two natural washes flowing though the site, extensive coordination was required with the developer and adjacent home builders to channel flows while maximizing usable acreage.

Emc2 worked extensively with Sundt Construction, the construction manager at Risk (CMAR) Contractor, during design and construction to maintain the project budget despite unique site issues that arose from the washes.

Serving Arizona clients since 1978, Emc2 specializes in educational, office and religious facility planning and design.
