Elderly resident is victim of phone scam

A Green Valley resident was swindled out of more than $7,000 last week after falling victim to an international phone scam.

The wheelchair-bound woman told officers she had received a call from a man who told her she won $275,000 in a Canadian sweepstakes and needed to wire a delivery fee, $2,118.99, to a bank in Toronto.

The unknown man called three hours later and told the victim she had won an additional $150,000, and that $2,883.99 was needed for delivery. The scammer then asked for an additional $2,118.99 to cover taxes, according to reports.

The victim sent a total of $7,067.97 to the Canadian bank.

When the scammer called back asking for another $2,000, the victim called the Sheriff’s Department.

Golf club employee accused

An employee at San Ignacio Golf Club in Green Valley has been accused of larceny — by wracking up thousands of extra “points” on certain customers’ frequent buyer cards.

The employee, who had worked at the club since 2005, admitted to repeatedly accruing extra points for three customers through the “Wildcat point system.”

San Ignacio officials could not provide officers with the exact monetary value of the items redeemed by the customers.

No criminal charges have been filed at this time.

Domestic abuse arrest

Officers arrested a man in Arivaca late Monday night on charges of domestic abuse.

Manuel M. Canez, 51, was arrested and charged with Domestic Violence and Assault after several neighbors reported hearing screaming coming from a residence in the 3,000 block of South White Buffalo Lane around 11 p.m.

The suspect’s girlfriend told officers Canez had hit her in the face during an argument.

Canez was booked into Pima County Adult Detention Center.
