Each Christmas season for the past 20 years, the Green Valley community of Pueblo Estates has drawn hundreds of visitors to its display of decorations and lights.

As soon as it gets dark, cars move slowly up and down the streets, pausing at glowing deer or reindeer, Santas and nativity scenes, residences covered in lights of every color.

Highlight is a living Nativity Scene from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Pueblo Estates Center. It is also the place to drop off contributions to the Green Valley Community Food Bank.

Harvey Hastrup of Pueblo Estates describes how “Christmas decorations and lights are growing like weeds” in the community off the east side of La Canada south of Duval Road:

“The Christmas season began early this year," he said. "A few blossoms of red and green lights sprouted a day or two before Thanksgiving. After Thanksgiving two weather fronts deposited some rainshowers and all of a sudden more elaborate decorations sprang up, mainly on Aliso Drive and Tuna Drive.

“Next, the rare rains and additional lights atracted a lot of animals into Pueblo Estates in the form of giraffee, deer and reindeer. This, of course, infuriated all of the rabbits, coyotes, javelinas and roadrunners in the area and they left.

“During the first week of December, a dust devl came roaring in from the east. Just like that, a house on Comara Drive and another on Mora Drive hit the jackpot by growing more than 10,000 lights.

“Three consecutive days around Dec. 7, more rains “Bombed” Pueblo Estates with lots of energy and vigor. Every street had at least two to four more additional displays. The whole park had taken on a new Christmas spirit...

“Of course, a few isolated pockets received no rain at all. In addition the soil was devoid of nutrients and substantial amounts clay shut down any possiblilbyt of growth and holiday cheer.

“By the last week before Christmas, every street in Pueblo Estates took a lot of pride and effort to make their section the best. Everyone in Pueblo Estates is very proud of their Christmas sparkle.

“This has been an annual affair for over 20 years and we like to think we are the very best in Green Valley. People from all over have visited us and we welcome everyone.

“The highlight of the Christmas season is our nativity scene from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. every night. Please come by a contribute to the food bank in the form of food and money. Hope to see you there and Merry Christmas!”
