NewsIn March of 1996, rancher Warner Glenn of Douglas photographed an adult male jaguar that his hunting dogs had treed in the Peloncillo Mountains. Six months later, Tucson hunter Jack Childs had a similar encounter and photographed and videotaped another adult male jaguar in the Baboquivari Mountains near Brown Canyon. In the ensuing 11 years, numerous hidden-camera photographs have been taken by Childs, wildlife biologist Emil McCain, and others of jaguars along the border in Arizona. Buenos Aires Wildlife Refuge Outdoor Education Planner Bonnie Swarbrick will present general background information on the jaguars of the Americas. Jaguar expert Sergio Avila, Wildlife Biologist and Outreach Specialist with Sky Island Alliance, will relate the intriguing story of the jaguars in Arizona. The event which takes place Nov. 3-4 will be hosted by Stephen H. Buck, Ph.D. After dinner, participants can watch the National Geographic program, “In Search of the Jaguar.” On Sunday, the group will hike up Brown Canyon to a beautiful natural stone arch. The hike is under 5 miles round trip with modest elevation gain. The workshops will be held at the Brown Canyon Environmental Education Center, located in the Baboquivari Mountains. The fee for a workshop is $68 for members of the Friends of Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge and $78 for nonmembers. To register for a workshop, please send a check to Friends of Buenos Aires NWR, PO Box 577, Arivaca, AZ 85601. For more information, contact Richard Conway at (520) 405-5665. Call the refuge at (520) 823-4251, ext. 116. The Refuge headquarters is six miles north of Sasabe on State Route 286.
