10,000 Lose Power
Sahuarita police close the intersection of Mission Twin Buttes Road and La Canada Drive on Saturday after flooding in the area. Two other intersections were shut down during the storm. The National Weather Service issued a flood watch at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. It remained in effect until 9 p.m. after strong storms raced through the Avra Valley area between Sahuarita and Three Points. About 10,000 customers in Green Valley and Sahuarita lost power after lightning hit a nearby Tucson Electric Power substation transformer. Nearly 3,800 were still without electricity late Saturday night.

Up, up and away
Green Valley woodworker Richard Vonk recently completed a small model Gee Bee plane complete with pedals for his great-grandson Christian “Bubby” Wiley, 2. Totally overpowered, incredibly disproportionate, the Gee Bee looked as though it would never get off the ground. Yet, in the Golden Age of pylon racing, no plane could lay claim to more wins or more memorable, remarkable looks.
