Sun editor earns APW award

Published: Thursday, July 12, 2007 9:16 PM MST

Karen Walenga, editor of the Sahuarita Sun newspaper, is a winner in the Arizona Press Women’s 2007 communications contest.

Walenga earned a first-place award for editing a non-daily newspaper. The judge’s comments said the Sun had a good news focus and was well laid out, making it easy for readers to get informed.

Walenga’s award was one of 83 given in 42 categories, including writing, editing, photography, marketing and books. The awards were presented at a June 30 luncheon, part of APW’s 53 annual conference, held at the Tubac Golf Resort.

First-place entries go on to compete in the National Federation of Press Women’s communications contest, with awards presented in September at the annual NFPW conference in Richmond, Va.

Walenga, a resident of Sahuarita Heights, has a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Arizona and has worked in the journalism industry for 22 years.

Arizona Press Women, an affiliated of NFPW, presented its 2007 Sweepstakes award to Ellie Mattausch of The Oracle newspaper.

The Arizona Newspapers Association award for outstanding writing went to Carol La Valley of the Payson Roundup.
