The applications have been received, the tee times have been set and the entry fees have been collected.

All that’s left to do now is play some golf.

Tomorrow morning, the second Green Valley Super Senior Golf Tournament kicks off at Desert Hills Golf Club.

The 54-hole tournament will last all week, with Wednesday’s round taking place at Torres Blancas.

The Country Club of Green Valley will host the final round on Friday.

“On a scale from one to 10, I’d give the tournament a 9.3,” Shannahan said after last year’s final round on July 22. “It was a fantastic tournament.”

Country Club of Green Valley member Bob Barrette will look to defend the individual title, which he won last year by firing a three-day total of 225.

The 72-year-old Barrette tallied an opening-round 75 at San Ignacio Golf Course. He followed that up with a one-over-par 73 at Torres Blancas and a final-round 75 at the Country Club.

Barrette took up the game in 1960, but didn’t focus on competitive golf until he retired to Green Valley in 2003. Barrette was formerly a prominent golf-club maker in Northern California.

Desert Hills is a shot-maker’s course, with many undulating fairways and steep elevation changes.

It is one of the area’s most picturesque courses, with a handful of tremendous views from the tee boxes.

A solid round at Desert Hills can put a player in position to take home the title, while an off-day can make for a long week.

Torres Blancas doesn’t feature as many elevation changes, but the trees lining each of the fairways force players to be careful with their tee shots.

The Country Club plays longer than its listed 6,628 yards, due to its many sand traps and water hazards.

In order for a player to take the tournament crown, he will have to earn it in the final round.

The tournament features four age divisions—65-69, 70-74, 75-79 and over 80.

Each age group is flighted, with awards given out in stroke and net categories.

There will be two gross and four net winners in each flight, along with the overall champion.

With over $2,000 in prizes—including numerous closest-to-the pin incentives and a new car for anyone skilled enough to hit a hole-in-one—Shannahan expects a fun, yet competitive tournament.

“We have some very good players in this area,” Shannahan said. “This is going to be a really fun week.”
