GVR postpones meeting on Canoa Ranch center

Walking a deadline tightrope, Green Valley Recreation directors canceled Thursday’s meeting where they planned to announce groundbreaking for the long-awaited Canoa Ranch recreation center.

GVR regulations require seven days to reschedule the meeting, and an important agreement-extension with the builder expires June 15.

Leon Lies, the director who’s overseeing this round of talks on the project, said lawyers had completed the plan’s final draft, but the other directors didn’t get a chance to review it before Thursday’s planned meeting.

“I couldn’t ask them to sign it without first reading it,” said Lees in the lobby of the West Center.

Thursday’s meeting was scheduled there, but most people were notified about the cancellation.

A few showed up however, only to see the vast auditorium empty except for four folding chairs next to the stage.

Contractor T. L. Roof has given the board an extension to June 15 to sign the contract.

It appears the first day for a directors’ meeting would be about June 12.

The Canoa Ranch center at the south end of Camino del Sol and Canoa Ranch Road is more than five years overdue and residents have protested the delay.
