Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told Liberty University's graduating class Saturday to honor the spirit of school founder Jerry Falwell by confronting "the growing culture of radical secularism" with Christian ideals.

Gingrich quoted Bible passages to a mournful crowd of about 17,000 packed into the university's football stadium in Lynchburg, Va., four days after Falwell's death.

Graduates, who covered the football field, chanted "Jerry! Jerry!" in tribute to Falwell.

U2 rocked Cannes' famous red carpet Saturday, playing to thousands of filmgoers and fans before a late-night screening of their new concert movie, "U23D."

The Irish band performed a two-song set on the steps of the festival hall as thousands of people crammed the street in front of the sea-front building.

"Happy birthday, Cannes," lead singer Bono said in French, saluting the festival's 60th anniversary.


Venezuela's Congress says it has approved financing for two films by actor Danny Glover, a close supporter of President Hugo Chavez.

The lawmaking body, said in a statement that it approved $20 million for two Glover productions, one on the life of South American liberator Simon Bolivar, the other on the life of Haitian revolution leader Toussaint Louverture.
