GV Forum finds help it needs

The Green Valley Forum, a 332-member organization that gathers weekly for a speakers’ program at East Center, is definitely going to continue, President Steve Cornell said this week.

The future of the organization, founded in 1976, looked to be in jeopardy last month when no one came forth to volunteer for the secretary-treasurer’s job.

Cornell wrote a letter to the editor of the Green Valley News and Sun in early April, noting that the organization might have to disband if no one agreed to take the position.

He said later that he had been appealing to members for six weeks, hoping to find a candidate.

He consulted Green Valley Recreation and was told that if the club couldn’t find a secretary-treasuer, the forum could change its bylaws to have two people fill the position, one as secretary, the other as treasurer.

After the letter to the editor, an article on the forum’s dilemma was published April 13.

“The following Sunday we had a volunteer for the position, Philip Newlin,” so the bylaws didn’t need to be changed, Cornell said.

Newlin was subsequently elected secretary-treasurer.

“We’re fine for the time being as long as everybody stays with us during the summer. We have speakers lined up through July and half of August,” Cornell said.

The Green Valley Forum meets every Wednesday at 10 a.m. at East Center.

The club is known for the quality and variety of its speakers, which range from artists to politicians and physicians and many more interesting, accomplished individuals.

GVR membership is required to join the Green Valley Forum.
