NewsSpecial events are planned next Saturday at the Tumacácori National Historical Park for International Migratory Bird Day. Most of the watching will take place at the park’s new Santa Cruz River Important Bird Area. There’ll be bird watching with experts, some short talks and a free continental breakfast. The day starts at 7 a.m. in the park’s parking lot. According to ranger Roy Simpson, “This is your chance to join excellent bird guides from Tucson Audubon Society and the Friends of the Santa Cruz River who will show you the birds and describe their habitats and behavior.” Among the birds that might be seen are the Yellow and Lucy’s Warbler, Vermilion Flycatcher, Summer Tanagers, Yellow-breasted Chats. Cassin, Western and Tropical Kingbirds. Guides will be on hand at the parking lot toward the Santa Cruz River and the new Important Bird Area. After some time at the river, the bird watchers will return to the Tumacácori park for a continental breakfast at 10 a.m. followed by a presentation and wild birds by Simpson’s Wildlife Sanctuary of Green Valley. There will be other presentations by Tucson Audubon and Friends of the Santa Cruz River. There’ll be no admission charge for those who show up for the 7 a.m. start.
