SportsWith the summer months approaching, many Green Valley residents scatter to various parts of the country to avoid the blistering Southern Arizona heat. This annual migration, so to speak, brings a pair of Green Valley bowling leagues to a close. The Villagers Senior Bowling League wrapped up its season on April 17, with a festive banquet held at the Grill on the Green at Canoa Ranch. Team 13, also known as “The Four Friends,” took home the league championship. Jerry Baldridge, Ellie Hansen, Ora Keller and Al Baldwin contributed to the winning effort. Sally Geffs and Doug Kemp won the annual end-of-the-year nine-pin no-tap tournament, with Bob Walsh owning the league’s high tournament game with a perfect 300. The banquet also featured the induction for the new officers for the 2007-08 season. Patty Stephens will serve as president, with Baldridge serving as the vice president. Matt Medina will serve as the secretary/treasurer. “All area seniors age 50 and up are invited to join the league, known to be the best in town,” Medina said. Next season will get going in the first week of September, with registration forms available at Green Valley Lanes. In addition, the Elks Senior Bowling League held its end-of-the-year banquet on Saturday, with Neil Hinton (202) and Marian Davis (162) taking home the top individual average honors. The league championship went to the Gremlins—Steve Mossholder, Mort Johnson, Carole Benson and Leo Pavlovich. Arline Sisson and Mossholder won the league-ending nine-pin no-tap tournament, with three 300 no-tap games highlighting the event. “The best part of the tournament was Neil’s 299 game without a single no-tap strike. We could hear him say, ‘Them cotton-pickin’ 10-pins,’” Medina said. The Amigos—Carolyn Hartzell, George Sumner, Carol and Ezra Rice—won the matched team tournament, held during the Elks’ “March Madness” event. Jean Brunner (plus 16) and Joe Christman (plus 14) won the Most Improved Bowlers awards. The high handicapped series titles belong to Marian Davis (761) and Pavlovich (780). Joan Sweeney (279) and Joe Musacchia (288) bowled the high handicapped games. Davis (638) and Pavlovich (696) bowled the high scratch series, with Davis (236) and Hinton (289) bowling the high scratch games. The Elks Bowling League raised nearly $1,000 for various Southern Arizona charities throughout their season. Baldridge will serve as the league’s 2007-08 president, with Sumner working as vice president and Medina pulling double-duty in the secretary/treasury department. Elks team captains will meet Aug. 24 to kick-start the new season, with the finale scheduled for May 5, 2008.
