On Saturday, April 14, Tanner (our Bichon-Poodle mix dog) got his weekly bath and grooming.

He loved his bath and enjoyed even more the hair dryer, brushing and treat that followed.

He was feeling on top of the world and pranced around the house showing himself off.

On Sunday morning, Tanner clearly was not feeling well.

He wouldn't eat, drink or take a walk (his other most enjoyable activity).

We took him to the vet on Monday and he was found to be dehydrated, below normal temperature and have probable liver problems.

Tests, care and overnight stay were estimated at $700.

On Tuesday, it was evident he needed more extensive care and it was recommended we take him to a specialist in Tucson. He was diagnosed there as having a condition which required the removal of his gall bladder.

We agreed to have this done at an estimated cost of around $5,000.We were advised that this procedure was successful better than 50 percent of the time.

Poor odds, we knew, but we decided to take the chance.

On Thursday, Tanner's condition took a turn for the worse, and a second surgery was required just to determine what was needed next.

This second surgery would cost a minimum of $3,000 and his chances for survival were very low. The decision was made, very reluctantly, to put Tanner to sleep.

Those of you who have pets and have not had to deal with this type of situation may not know what it's like to have to make such a decision.  We hope you never do.

The main reason we're writing to you is to inform you that you can take action now that would make your decision easier.

Take the time now to check out medical insurance for your pet. Some appear to be not so good; some appear to be better.

And the better ones would certainly make financial decisions about your pet's health easier to deal with.

Tanner was a great dog and a wonderful companion. We miss him very much.
