NewsA memorial service is planned Friday near where two people were shot dead in the desert west of Green Valley late last month. The people to be remembered are Antonio Perez-Perez, 30, and his 28-year-old sister-in-law Consuelo Perez-Roman, both from the Mexican state of Chiapas The Rev. Randy J. Mayer, pastor of the Good Shepherd United Church of Christ, said people wanting to attend the service should meet at the church, 17750 South La Canada Drive, at 10:40 a.m. They’ll travel together to the site of the killings, near Duval Mine Road and Caterpillar Trail for the 11 a.m. service. The Green Valley Samaritans are also helping arrange the special service. Mayer said two ministers from Mexico will also participate in the service. Perez-Perez and Perez-Roman were part of a group of 23 who were driving through the desert after crossing the border illegally near Sasabe. Several men, apparently drug hijackers, tried to stop the vehicle and when it didn’t, started firing at it. Another man in the vehicle was also wounded and was hospitalized in good condition. U.S. law enforcement agents arrested two men on first degree murder charges. Two other men reportedly got away. jlamb@gvnews.com | 547-9749
