FIT has been a fixture in Green Valley for years. Having worked there, I am sorry to see it close.

What other exercise options are available in Green Valley if you are a displaced member?

If you are a Green Valley Recreation member, you have access to five fitness centers located throughout town.

While many of the GVR machines are similar to those at FIT, it can still be a struggle to adjust to a new exercise environment.

If you are unfamiliar with the centers and the equipment, you can attend a free orientation offered several times each month.

There are two trainers available for a fee—Glenda Martinez and myself—if you need personal instruction. A wide range of classes are available at GVR as well.

Exercise classes are also available at Anamax Recreation Center.

Call 625-2731 for information or view their website at www.ci.sahuarita.az.us./parksrec/fitnessclass.cfm.

Classes include Pilates, aerobics, Yoga, stretching and body sculpting.

If you check around, you will find that a few classes are offered at local churches that are suitable for older adults. Jazzercize classes are also held at Rancho Resort.

There is also Body Start Health and Fitness, as well as Ladies Workout Express and Curves—two express fitness studios.

In addition, there are two Pilates studios with classes and individual instruction—Mind to Motion and Body Quest Pilates.

Whichever option you choose, remember to include aerobic exercise, resistance training, stretching and balance exercises in your workout routine.

Home gyms

Home equipment is another option and is more affordable than you might think.

The most important things to consider are your fitness goals, budget, space, health and physical limitations.

If you are a beginner, you might start with exercise tubing or bands, some light dumbbells and a stability ball.

If you are more advanced, you'll want a wider range of free weights or maybe a weight machine.

If you don't know what kind of equipment you need to accomplish your goals, consult an exercise professional for advice and a training program.

The Internet is a tremendous resource for investigating equipment and comparing features and brands. Check out www.ConsumerSearch.com to search on home gym reviews or specific brands or www.eOpinons.com.

Space is one of the biggest limitations when choosing equipment. I chose a folding treadmill and elliptical, which gave me more floor space for a folding bench. They can be rolled out of the way and stored if I need more space.

However, aerobic exercise can be as simple and inexpensive as walking or working out to an exercise video. One of my favorites is Leslie Sansone’s “Walk Away the Pounds.”

A treadmill, recumbent bike or elliptical trainer is more expensive but well worth the money if it increases your exercise enjoyment.

A jump-rope, rebounder or weighted hula hoop can give an invigorating workout for a few dollars.

You should try out all equipment before buying. I eliminated several highly rated options I found on the Internet because I could not try them.

You really have to be able to use the machine to determine if it is comfortable, enjoyable and challenging.

Also, you should assess how difficult or time-consuming it is to make weight or speed changes during exercise.

Compare the warranty and be sure to find out what kind of maintenance is required and if service is available locally.

Check the classifieds for used equipment, because you will probably find that most of it is only “gently used.” Admittedly, many people buy home equipment and don't use it.

A home gym can be a great experience if you put some time into understanding your needs and finding the right equipment.

" I hope you don't vote next year Corky. You clearly do not deserve it. To leave Rickey Henderson off your ballot is one of the stupidest things I have ever seen. You honestly think that Matt Williams was better than Rickey Henderson??? Ridiculous. Your half hearted apology afterwards was just as pathetic. "
