NewsEditor: In reference to Robert Nordlander's Letter to the Editor (April 4), I agree that Thomas Jefferson was a great president and contributed much in the founding of this country (Declaration of Independence, Constitution, etc.). The quotes Mr. Nordlander attributed to Jefferson's questioning the existence of God and the virgin birth of Jesus did not represent the orthodox Christian views of the majority (52 out of 55) our founders at that time. However, Thomas Jefferson did support many, if not most, of the basic tenets of Christianity that Mr. Norlander ignored. Space does not allow documenting all of the historical evidence that Jefferson supported government involvement in regards to the Bible and Christianity. The following is but a mere sampling of the real Thomas Jefferson. One of the documents he signed while president states "in the year of our Lord Christ in 1804." There were others similarly signed while president, including the word "God" in our national motto and requiring oaths saying "So Help Me God," taken on the Bible. Using the Bible and non-denominational religious instruction in three different school districts and the plan in each one of these required that the Bible be taught in public schools. Also, Jefferson designated space in the rotunda of the University of Virginia for chapel services. Contrary to Mr. Nordland’s statements, the Jerry Falwells, Pat Robertsons, orthodox Christians of today and, obviously, Thomas Jefferson would certainly be in agreement with all of the above.
