Everyone loves a bargain

Here in Green Valley, bargains can be found if you know where to look. I'd like to tell you about several places I've discovered where you can find unique, sometimes one-of-a-kind bargains.

No matter what you call them—thrift stores, resale shops or consignment stores—they all result in big savings for the thrifty shopper. Plus it's just plain fun to find things you didn't know you needed.

If you've been in Green Valley for any length of time, you already know about the White Elephant Shop which is, no doubt, the best-known and largest of all the resale shops in our area.

Donations are always accepted and items turn over constantly, so if you see something you like you'd better grab it quick because it won't be there the next time you go.

It's staffed by more than 425 volunteers and revenues support at least 130 local schools and charitable organizations.

The Attic Thrift Shop at The Animal League of Green Valley is another fun place where you can find clothing, books, knickknacks, kitchen wares, furniture and collectibles.

The proceeds go to support animals that can't be cared for by their owners. If you're lucky you might even find yourself bringing home one of the adorable creatures that sometimes are brought into the shop.

The St. Vincent de Paul Resale Shop, New To You, and Gift Boutique are all within Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church.

Here you will find clothing, collectibles, art work, housewares, gifts, etc. Proceeds from New To You and the Gift Boutique support local charities and the Resale Shop proceeds go the St. Vincent de Paul organization.

At the Resale shop, I recently found a beautifully framed Southwest design crewel work picture for $8.

The newest resale shop to open, DaZee's (pronounced daises) is on W. Duval Road. Proceeds from DaZee's are used to support domestic violence advocacy work and to build a shelter/safe house for Southern Pima/Santa Cruz County. DaZee's supplies victims/survivors with clothing so they can return to work and also puts them in touch with local salons who provide hairstyles and manicures.

At DaZee's you will find many "gently used" high-end labels at bargain prices plus you will be helping domestic violence victims and their families—a win, win for everyone.

All Home Things, in the Foothills Plaza, bills itself as Green Valley's Thrift Center. As the name suggests, you can find many items for the home but they also sell clothing and shoes.

This is not a consignment store. Items are purchased outright from owners, so if you have something you would like to sell, they would like to hear from you.

If you are looking for unique gift items at great prices, check out the Talents Unlimited Boutique at St. Francis-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church.

Everything in the shop is new and many are hand-crafted by church members. Be sure to look at the music boxes. Each one is uniquely wrapped to celebrate a special occasion and the music complements the theme. For example, the box wrapped with Shamrock paper plays the tune, “Danny Boy.” Proceeds support the church and local charities.

Encore Classics in the Green Valley Mall specializes in ladies new and like-new designer and brand name apparel. You can also find shoes, purses, and jewelry sold on a consignment basis.

Consignors receive 40 percent of the selling price. If items do not sell and the consignor does not care to have them back, they are donated to the Brewster Center for Domestic Violence in Tucson.

Merchandise for the home and office found at Green Valley Furnishings is either on consignment or brand-new (indicated by a red asterisk on the tag) . Their motto is "Shop smarter, not harder."

The La Posada Treasure Shoppe on the La Posada campus sells fine quality furniture, art, collectibles, jewelry and accessories for the home. Items are either donated or sold on consignment. Consignors receive 65 percent of the selling price over $100. Proceeds benefit the La Posada Foundation.

Which of these is my favorite place to shop? I'll NEVER tell!
