Local author McMahon to hold book signing in Tucson, April 9

Published: Friday, April 8, 2005 7:37 AM MST

Judi McMahon, author of a new novel, "Someone To Watch Over Me," was recently a speaker at the prestigious Round Table Book Club in California, the largest book club in the world.

While visiting, McMahon was given a VIP tour of the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, established by President Gerald Ford's wife in the 1970s.

"The buildings are spectacular the views wonderful, and the facilities excellent for those who need both inpatient and outpatient help in dealing with addiction to alcohol and drugs," McMahon reported.

"And what was truly amazing is how Mrs. Ford had a hand in just about everything.

"She approved designs, made suggestions. For instance, the meditation room is one where you can just go and sit peacefully, and look at the mountain views in the background and, up close, a beautiful waterfall."

McMahon presented a copy of her book for Mrs. Ford and for the staff. When they read through it, they requested copies for their patient library.

Four of the books are now there for women and men as they deal with their own addictions.

"Someone To Watch Over Me," published by Fulfillment Services in Tucson, is the story of three women coming of age in New York in the 1960s and in it, one of the three deals with overcoming addiction to alcohol and pills.

The book is said to be empowering to women and inspiring to those who have to overcome their own problems.

McMahon moved to Tucson from New York five years ago.

"It's beautiful, and my daughter Valentina, to whom I dedicated the book, has a chance to grow up in a much safer, healthier environment," she said.

McMahon has done local radio and television interviews and will hold a book-signing on Saturday, April 9, at 3 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, 5130 E. Broadway in Tucson.
