GREEN VALLEY--Continental School Governing Board member Alan Beal turned in his resignation papers to the district office Wednesday. Beal, who serves as the board clerk, has accepted a new job in the Phoenix area which starts on Monday.

Beal, former administrator at the Santa Rita Care Center in Green Valley, will continue his work in the nursing home field as the administrator with a small ownership in the Phoenix-based business.

Beal was appointed to Continental School Board District 39 in December 2003 by Pima County School Superintendent Linda Arzoumanian.

He replaced board member Mike Weber, who also left the board to take a job in the Phoenix area.

Beal's term after his appointment ran until Dec. 31, 2004. The position appeared on the November 2004 election ballot as a special term position that expires in Dec. 31, 2006. Beal ran and won the seat in that election.

Beal and his wife Sharon, who also worked for Santa Rita Care Center management, have lived and worked in the Green Valley area for more than five years. They have one child, Taylor Ward, currently a seventh-grader at Continental.

"I'll miss Green Valley very much, but this was a good opportunity for me and I had to take it," Beal said Wednesday. "Taylor and Sharon will stay behind so Taylor can finish the school year at Continental and then they can join me."

Superintendent Ken Brown informed the other board members of Beal's leaving, although the board will have to formally approve his resignation at a meeting.

"Alan was a very good board member," Brown said. "We are sorry to see him leave, but we wish him only the best of luck in his new post."

Brown said he contacted the county superintendent's office in charge of filling the vacancy.

"According to the election official at the county office, a press release will be sent out to local media informing them of the vacancy which runs until the election in November 2006," Brown added.

"We are encouraged to ask local Continental School District residents to apply to fill the position via an interview with the county superintendent and possibly a committee of citizens from our district."
