As reported by Philip Franchine (Green Valley News, Feb. 9, 2005, "GVCCC Bike plan wins plaudits") the public review of the GVCCC "Master Plan for Multi-Use Lanes & Trails" was very successful.

120 local citizens attended the public review held Feb. 3, 2005. We were very pleased with the large turn-out in support of this planning intended to maintain the capability to walk, bike, run, and drive golf carts throughout our community in a safe and enjoyable manner.

Many constructive comments and suggestions were made, and they will be included in our final Master Plan Report. Officials from Pima County, Sahuarita, Pima Association of Governments, and the Tucson-Pima County Bicycle Advisory Committee participated in this review and enthusiastically supported our draft Master Plan.

The many people that have supported our requests for new multi-use lanes over the past year, and that have made this Master Plan possible should be recognized:

  • Green Valley Community Coordinating Council (GVCCC) for supporting us from the beginning, and for asking our committee to draft the Master Plan as part of their "Vision 2020" project. The GVCCC staff has given us tremendous support. Dick Roberts, president GVCCC and Chet Davis, VP GVCCC provided guidance and advice whenever requested. Sandi Richey created the Master Plan maps as an enthusiastic volunteer to our committee.

  • Pima County DOT and Supervisor Ray Carroll for responding to Green Valley's concerns by providing the new lanes on Camino del Sol last year, and those soon to be on Continental Road east of Abrego.

  • The Green Valley News for keeping the Green Valley - Sahuarita community informed of our efforts and progress in establishing new multi-use lanes needed for safety.

  • The Town of Sahuarita, John Neunuebel, planning director, for providing the Sahuarita draft Master Plan maps of lanes & trails for our review of connectivity between Sahuarita and Green Valley.

  • Green Valley Recreation (GVR), Connie Webster and Shelley Freeman, for providing conference rooms and equipment for meetings.

    Committee members

  • GVCCC Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee members all have made contributions to getting the new lanes and developing the Master Plan. Our committee includes a diversity of views and interests which strengthens the planning process. Some members should be recognized for special efforts, such as:

  • Jim Jordan has been instrumental in coordinating our needs with PCDOT and La Posada to establish the new lanes on Camino del Sol and Continental;

  • Judith Le Clair chaired the Pedestrian part of our Master Plan, and formed a team to define the trails we have and those we need to save;

  • Ralph Edwards initiated our activity to obtain Grants and started our out-reach to the business community;

  • George Blank has created photo displays and slide shows that describe our plans;

  • Gary Strauss initiated a cattle guard safety review for ADOT and mapped the desert trails for the Master Plan.

    But still, most important is the continued support of the citizens and businesses of the Green Valley/Sahuarita community to insist on proper future plans and action to maintain the quality of life we want.
