  • Monday, Jan. 31: A contractor reported that a 2002 Caterpillar backhoe was stolen sometime over the weekend from a construction site a quarter mile south of Calle Tres on Camino del Sol.

The backhoe was described as yellow with a hole in the front windshield. There are no suspects.

  • Monday, Jan. 31: Two male students at the Itzcalli Academy, on Calle de las Tiendas in Green Valley, were arrested and paper- referred for disorderly conduct after a classroom fight.

  • Saturday, Jan. 29: A resident of the 1000 block of Placita Inspirada reported that a diamond ring worth about $3,000 was missing from his home after contractors did work there. The ring was among several pieces of jewelry left on a dressing table. An investigation is under way.

  • Friday, Jan. 28: Around 11:10 p.m., a Pima County Sheriff's deputy became involved in a car chase with a Dodge 4x4 pick-up later found to be stolen and loaded with illegal migrants.

The deputy began following the truck at Interstate 19 and Continental Road because it had no taillights. When the deputy tried to pull the truck over, it sped up and tried to get away, heading north on Old Nogales Highway.

The truck stopped suddenly next to the railroad tracks near Mile Post 46, and the driver and more than a dozen passengers, including many who were hiding prone in the truck's bed, attempted to flee. The driver was not arrested, but 14 illegal migrants were taken into custody and handed over to the U.S. Border Patrol. The truck was discovered to have been stolen from the University of Arizona.

The above information is gleaned from police reports and interviews with law enforcement officials.
