Dr. Ken Brown, new superintendent of Continental School District, will talk briefly to the American Association of University Women (AAUW) at its kick off meeting, Monday, Sept. 20, at Desert Hills Center, 2980 S. Camino Del Sol. The meeting begins at 10 a.m.

Brown will encourage greater community use of the school's facilities and additional volunteerism in a variety of after school programs.

He will also talk about his new concentration focus on standards. "It all begins here," he said.

On the job less than three months, he hopes to continue the tradition of education achievement in the K-4 and grades 5-8 programs. He's instituted a more interactive communication among students and teachers. Brown looks forward to working and someday, retiring here.

AAUW, a nationwide organization in place for over 120 years, promotes "equity for all women and girls, life-long education, and positive societal change."

The Green Valley Branch, chartered in 1974 and currently, Arizona's largest chapter, has been active in storytelling in schools, social justice summits, arthritis awareness, scholarships, grants, and much more.

AAUW is a co-sponsor of an upcoming political candidate forum on Wednesday, Sept. 22, from 9-11 a.m. at West Center.

At the AAUW meeting on Monday, following Brown's presentation, a variety of interest groups will have tables available so members can learn more and sign up for on-going activities.

Groups include antiques and collectibles, book discussion, border issues, bridge, creative writing, gourmet, epicurean, mystery, singles, Southwest culture, travel, and others.

A great program lineup is in store for the coming year at general meetings including speakers from a variety of disciplines, a concert, and another Authorama where community and AAUW members can meet and interact with local and other well known authors. They can also get autographed copies of their books.

AAUW membership is open to college graduates with baccalaureate or higher degrees from accredited colleges or universities.

Membership includes local and state newsletters along with some national publications and membership in the International Federation of Women. Dues are nominal.
