Mexico's new border czar to address international trade group

Published: Friday, September 17, 2004 6:27 AM MST

How to keep the U.S.-Mexican border both open and secure is a vexing, almost contradictory concept.

Mexico's new border czar, Arturo Gonzales Cruz, will give his ideas on the subject to the Border Trade Alliance in Mexico City Sept. 29 and 30.

Mexico President Vicente Fox appointed Gonzales Cruz to be Mexico Foreign Ministry's institutional liaison for northern border affairs.

"Mr. Gonzales Cruz offers a unique insight into Mexican policies and trade issues affecting those of us along the U.S.-Mexico border region," said Jessica Pacheco, chairperson of the Border Trade Alliance's board of directors.

She added, "We look forward to hearing his position on how the countries can effectively work together to keep our borders open and secure."

The Border Trade Alliance's main goals include addressing trade and economic issues affecting North America.

It provides a voice for border communities before the North American Free Trade Alliance, the NAFTA.
